Lake Pepin & Frontenac Bluffs
When a session calls for scale and cinema, the Pepin bluffs deliver. Sweeping river vistas, painterly sunsets, and quiet pull-offs make this our go-to for engagement and wedding portraits.
Dramatic Mississippi River bluffs an hour east of Rochester.
Everything you need to know before the shoot.
- —Late April – May for blossoms
- —Late September – mid-October for peak bluff color
- —Late June for long, soft sunsets
Lean cinematic: long dresses, suits, structured coats. Earth tones, deep greens, and warm neutrals echo the bluffs. Avoid pure white — the river light tends to blow it out at sunset.
We typically use Frontenac State Park (29223 County 28 Blvd, Frontenac) and the Lake City Marina pull-offs. State park sticker required for Frontenac; we'll send the exact meet-up coordinates the morning of the shoot.
What we'll actually photograph.
- 01Sweeping wide portraits with the river valley behind
- 02Intimate, low-light frames in the bluff-top oaks
- 03Sunset silhouettes along the rocky shoreline
- 04Editorial walking shots on the marina dock
Common questions.
How far is Lake Pepin from Rochester?+
About 55 minutes by car. We recommend leaving Rochester two and a half hours before sunset so we can scout light on arrival.
Is the bluff hike difficult?+
Our standard spots are short walks (5–10 minutes) from the parking pull-offs. We'll let you know in advance if a particular spot needs sturdier footwear.
